November has been designated as National Pet Diabetes Month to make pet owners aware that, just like people, your pets can suffer from diabetes too. Diabetes mellitus describes a group of metabolic diseases in which the body’s inability to produce any or enough insulin causes elevated levels of glucose (sugar) in the blood. This condition is manageable, and pets can live a normal life when treated and monitored properly. Just like their human friends, overweight pets are at a higher risk of developing diabetes. Here are some other possible symptoms.
SYMPTOMS:
- · Excessive Eating
- · Excessive drinking
- · Excessive urination
- · Persistent urinary tract
- · Lethargy
- · Dehydration
Diabetes can be managed with a good, consistent diet, proper exercise, weight loss, and injectable insulin. According to the American Veterinary Medical Association, diabetic dogs will almost always need to be on insulin for the remainder of their lives whereas some cats can have their diabetes controlled and even reversed by good glucose control and proper diet.
