Have you noticed your dog scratching more than usual? Well this could be an indication of several skin problems - but most often it is nothing serious. As we head inside for the winter months, and the humidity of summer has passed, it is not unusual for pets, as well as their humans, to develop dry skin. Dry skin is itchy and can cause visible flakes called dandruff. For humans, we have special dandruff shampoos and moisturizing creams. Well, the same is true for pets. There are several home remedies as well as store bought products that can relieve your pet's dry skin and discomforts.
Here are 5 simple remedies:
1. Diet: Choose a diet high in protein and that contains Omega-3 and Omega-6 to help your pet's fur grow beautifully and keep its skin moist and supple.
2. Supplement: Supplement your dog food with one to three tablespoons of flaxseed oil daily for the first six weeks. Some high end foods already include flaxseed.
3. Bathing: Twice a month should be plenty to keep your pet clean in the winter; overbathing removes essential oils from your pets skin.
4. Shampoo: Be sure to use a moisturizing shampoo. There are products on the market, or you can try some home recipes below.
5. Massage: Try rubbing your pet with an oil high in Vitamin E.
Homemade Moisturizing Shampoo:
Several of Braxton's Animal Works' loyal customers recommend this recipe, especially Mary B. of Devon.
Add one cup of dish detergent and 1 cup white vinegar to one quart of water. Store in an old shampoo bottle that has been rinsed thoroughly.

As always, if you have questions about shampoos, supplements, or food, consult the helpful staff at Braxton's Animal Works; they are well versed in these areas.
Remember, generally winter dry skin is something easily treated at home whether with store bought products or home remedies. If the symptoms persist and you are concerned, consult your veterinarian.
