February, National Responsible Pet Owners Month, was designated to celebrate and promote responsible pet ownership. Most of us realize that owning a pet is a privilege and should result in a mutually beneficial relationship. National Responsible Pet Owners Month is a time to recommit ourselves to our pets. Pet ownership comes with obligations as well as benefits. The following are a few points to consider:

  • Commit to the relationship for life
  • Be sure that you have the financial resources
  • Choose a pet appropriate for your lifestyle
  • Properly identify and register your pets
  • Provide exercise and mental stimulation
  • Provide preventative health care with regular vet visits
  • Spay/Neuter for reproduction control

According to Dr. Jan Pol, world-renowned veterinarian from the National Geographic series The Incredible Dr. Pol, " Approximately 3.7 million animals are euthanized each year due to overcrowding and poorly-funded shelters. Spaying and neutering is the best way to prevent overcrowding in shelters. I support organizations like Givebones that recognize the importance of rescuing pets and helping shelters around the country." So recommit to your pets and support our local shelters and rescues.
