Ahhh - finally some warmer weather.
It's hard to believe that just five days ago the temperature was -1 degrees. While the warm weather is a welcome delight, it also brings a variety of conditions, including heavy rains, severe weather, and rapid snow melt that can increase your flood risk.
Don't be caught off guard, get the facts and know the risks. Take action to protect yourself, your family, and your furry friends.
Since March 15 - March 21, 2015 is designated as National Flood Safety Awareness Week by the National Weather Service, it is the perfect time to review flood threats and flood safety practices.
According to NOAA, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association, "Except for heat related fatalities, more deaths occur from flooding than any other hazard. Why? Most people fail to realize the power of water. For example, six inches of fast-moving flood water can knock you off your feet."
If water can knock a person to the ground, imagine what it can do to a cat or dog?
Follow these suggestions to keep Fido or Fluffy safe this spring:
- Don’t let your dog out in the yard without supervision.
- If you have to go out, make sure that your pets have access to fresh water and a snack before you leave as you might be stuck out longer then expected if flash flooding does occur.
- If possible, especially if you are in area prone to flooding, set up an indoor potty station until the storms pass and you can safely take your dog outside.
Don't underestimate the power of water. Check out Ready.gov for interactive tools to help you learn the steps you can take before, during, and after a flood to prepare yourself and your entire family.
