The change of seasons conjures thoughts of classic autumn activities, especially in Philadelphia and its surrounding areas. After living in Houston, Texas, where there are only subtle differences in the seasons, I was happy to return to Pennsylvania and its splendid fall foliage. I truly missed the brilliant displays of gold, scarlet, and orange as well as the crisp, cool air of autumn. There is nothing like apple picking, hayrides, and pumpkin chuckin on a cool October afternoon. Hiking is another wonderful way for you to experience the great outdoors before winter descends upon us.

Hiking can be a great alternative to your normal exercise routine. It is a wonderful way to enjoy the autumn weather and bond with your dog. If you have never hiked before, you need to do a little research to prepare.  Just like humans, your dog needs to be prepared too.

Some things to consider:

Start Slowly: It is important to be honest about your and your dog’s level of fitness.

Start Small: Find small trails and build up to longer ones.

Share the Load: If you want your dog to share some of the load, have him wear a pack at home, then on short walks, and finally longer ones.

Be Prepared: Always carry a first-aid kit for both you and your dog.

Food and Water: Hydration is important for a working dog even in cool weather and dogs will eat more with vigorous exercise.

Packs: Your dog should be able to carry his/her own food and water. Check out Braxton’s Animal Works for advice on a variety of dog packs.

Philadelphia and its surrounding area have many places to hike with your dog. Check out the book The 55 Best Places To Hike With Your Dog In The Philadelphia Region for tips on great spots to hike as well as proper preparation.

Hiking with your dog can be a wonderful way to explore the great outdoors especially at this time of year. The foliage of South Eastern Pennsylvania is expected to reach its peak color the last two weeks of October, so why not give hiking a try? Remember, prepare carefully and get out and enjoy nature’s beauty.
