Did you ever wonder what happens to the pets of active military men and women? When active military men and women are newly deployed, redeployed, or extend deployment, they face a number of issues regarding their homes and families. Frequently, one of those dilemmas is what to do with their companion animals. How can they ensure that their pets will be taken care of while they are away, and that they can be reunited with their pets when they return?

The options

When servicemen and women are called for duty, the first and best option in arranging for the care of their companion animals is to find a family member, friend, or neighbor who can temporarily take in the animals. But this option is not available to everyone, especially to military personnel stationed far from home.

There are shelters and private groups, such as Canine CorpsDogs on Deployment, Guardian Angels for Soldiers' PetsMilitary Pets FOSTER Project, and People/Animals = Companions Together (PACT) Military Foster Program (Philadelphia, PA) that  may be able to help place pets in foster homes temporarily.

In particular, Canine Corps and PACT are located in Pennsylvania and can always use your help. Civilians can aid in several ways.

  • Foster a Pet: You can volunteer to be a foster family to a military companion animal.
  • Volunteer:  You can donate your time and energy to assist these organizations to help animals in need.
  • Donate Money: You can donate money for supplies.

Military families affected by continuing troop deployments need help on many different fronts, not the least of which is temporary pet care. Offering or finding foster homes is a way to thank these soldiers and their families for their deep devotion in the service of their country. So this Memorial Day consider giving of yourself to thank the men and women who have given for us.
