National Pet Week® is always observed the first full week in May - this year May 7-13. Created in 1981 by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) and the Auxiliary to the AVMA, National Pet Week is dedicated to celebrating America’s more than 200 million pets that enrich lives each and every day and encourage responsible pet care every day of the year.

Whether companion, comedian, confidant, or protector, your pets are always there for you and don’t ask for much in return. National Pet Week® celebrates this bond and encourages pet owners to be certain they are providing their best friends with all they need for a happy, healthy life every week of the year.

As pet owners, what can we do to celebrate this week? The AVMA has outlined 7 steps to a happier, healthier pet. An abbreviated version follows.

      1. Choose well, commit for life.
      2. Socialize now. New doesn’t have to be scary.
      3. Exercise body. Exercise mind.
      4. Love your pet? See your vet!
      5. Pet population control: Know your role.
      6. Emergencies happen. Be prepared.
      7. Give them a lifetime of love.
