June has been designated as National Pet Preparedness Month to coincide with the first month of hurricane season. Would you be ready at a moment's notice?
This designation was established to urge people with pets to make preparations in case they should be hit by a disaster. Whether it is flooding, loss of power, or tornadoes, it is important to be ready should you have to flee your home quickly.
The American Humane Association wants all pet owners to be as prepared as possible in case of an emergency. A little preparation goes a long way in an emergency and having a go-bag will help you keep calm and evacuate quickly. This is especially important if you have the added responsibility of pets. According to the American Pet Products Association National Pet Owners Survey, the majority of owners stated that they would take their pets with them in the event of a disaster.
Even if you already have a go-bag, use this month as an annual reminder to replace old food and medication and to update photos and emergency contact information. If you haven't created a bag yet, use this list to help get you started. The following are helpful preparation tips to ensure that your pets are included in your emergency evacuation plans and safety procedures.
10 Items to Include in a Pet Preparedness Kit

Store an emergency kit and leashes as close to an exit as possible. Make sure that everyone in the family knows where it is, and that it clearly labeled and easy to carry.
It is better to plan for the worst-case scenario than to be caught off guard.
