There is no better way for your dog to keep cool in this miserable heat than a dip in the backyard pool. Swimming is also a great low impact exercise for dogs with joint issues; however, there are safety precautions to keep in mind. Here are five pool safety tips to assure that you and your dog enjoy those dips in the pool this summer. For more detailed information on this subject, click here.
Five Pet Pool Safety Tips:
1. Water Safety: Even though dogs have a natural instinct to swim, you will still need to get in and help your dog the first couple of times to be sure he is comfortable.
2. Chlorine Levels: Dogs can tolerate the same chlorine levels as humans, but if the chlorine levels are too high, a dog's skin can become particularly irritated.
3. Post Swimming Care: To prevent dry skin, dogs should be hosed off after swimming in a backyard pool. To avoid ear infections, dry out your pup's ears after their dip.
4. Problems: Because dogs get thirsty when they are in the pool, keep plenty of fresh water available for them to drink so that they don't resort to pool water. Chlorinated water can cause stomach issues in dogs.
5. Moderation: Everything in moderation. Swimming is a great exercise for dogs, but remember to vary the exercises to keep dogs in good shape.
It is not pleasant to imagine an emergency spoiling your summer fun, but a little pre-planning and training will keep you and your pets enjoying the pool for years to come. Braxton's offers a wide selection of summer toys for your dog, stop by and check them out.
